Policy on Common Student Learning Outcomes
As part of the CVCC effort to perform program reviews, improve assessment methods, and to coordinate instruction across courses and programs, this proposal is to develop a college-wide policy regarding common course learning objectives between all modalities (seated, online, dual enrollment and hybrid). While it is anticipated that instructors who teach in all modalities would insure that students receive the same instruction, assessments, and grading rubrics overall in either setting, there is no current CVCC policy in place to address instruction across platforms. Some faculty, including adjunct faculty, teach in only one modality, so coordination becomes even more important to enhance the quality of instruction across programs and courses.
Common Student Learning Outcomes
Every course at Central VA Community College should be taught using Common Student Learning Outcomes, regardless of the modality. Program and Department heads will assign relevant faculty members to collaboratively develop Common Student Learning Outcomes for each college course that will apply to all faculty members teaching that course in any modality. These designated faculty members will annually review the Student Learning Outcomes and make necessary revisions. Common Student Learning Outcomes would apply to all instructors, regardless of their mode of teaching, for each specific course. To insure that all students are acquainted with these common objectives, inclusion of the Common Student Learning Outcomes for each course is a required element of the course syllabus. It is required that all syllabi be submitted to Division Deans at the beginning of each semester. It is the responsibility of the Program and Department to oversee that Common Student Learning Outcomes are being taught across modalities by each instructor of a specific course.
Individual/Optional Learning Objectives
Individual faculty may then add specific learning objectives that meet, or complement, the basic Common Learning Objectives for each course. This policy in no way recommends delivery or assessments methods. This insures academic freedom to teach the material in the manner that the instructor determines is the most effective method to assess student performance, while still insuring that all students who have taken that course have achieved some core competencies, regardless of the delivery method.
The current CVCC policy on Syllabus/Course Outline indicates that one part of the required content is a course description. Using the VCCS Master Course List, faculty should include the VCCS course descriptions approved by faculty peers throughout programs and courses.
